When talking to people for a while, my hands need to fidget with something. At social events, others hold paper cups to drink — I hold mine to squeeze. At work, I need background music to focus.
These are probably all the same thing: using small actions to occupy the idle bandwidth that might otherwise distract you, so the main thread runs smoother.
Since I started working with AI, I've noticed these fidgets aren't as necessary. AI collaboration involves constant context switching, demanding intense attention in short bursts. The idle bandwidth is already occupied. Background music has become interference instead of help.
When bandwidth is full, the hands go quiet.
